In car satellite navigation systems are devices that aid navigation using satellite information, they use the GPS system of satellites so are also known as GPS systems. GPS stands for Global Positioning System and consists of 27 satellites that orbit the earth, using these the GPS system can always tell where you are and using the map information included with the GPS system it can work out the routes for where you need to go. It is therefore very difficult to get lost when you have a satellite navigation system at your disposal as it displays on the screen where you are at any time, the GPS technology can even correct your route should you make a mistake as it always knows where you are!

Satellite navigation systems have an LCD screen that displays the map of your current location, this map updates as you move so you can see where you are going on the screen all of the time which is very cool. The screen will indicate on the map where you should be heading so if you need to make a turn the screen will indicate this, some models also have voice instructions so it can actually tell you where to go. These GPS systems with a voice are very useful as it means you do not have to look away from the road to look at the screen, you can even change the type of person that is telling you where to go on some GPS systems.

There are two main types of satellite navigation system that you can buy for your car, the type that is installed in your car and the type that is portable. The portable types are usually smaller with a smaller screen but have the advantage of being able to operate outside of your car so you can walk around with it, these portable GPS systems usually have a stand or bracket which holds the GPS system when it is in the car so it is easily viewable.
